The photo clears it all up

Yahoo! News - Endangered Whooping Cranes Arrive in Fla.

The planes are escorting the endangered cranes, which were raised in captivity, to teach them how to migrate. The flock is the fourth to learn the route, thanks to the Canadian nonprofit group Operation Migration.

This is an article which is hard to understand without the picture...
