Sport tires wear out faster, more prone to blow outs
WSJ.com - 'Sports Package' Tire WoesWe've never been big fans of "sports packages," in part because the larger, lower-profile tires included in these packages tend to wear surprisingly quickly and are often expensive to replace. Part of the problem is that the higher-performance tires are made from a softer material ("compound" in tire-speak) that grips the road better but is less durable than harder compounds used in higher-mileage tires.
It's true that extreme heat can accelerate tire wear, but I doubt that is your main problem. Encounters with speed bumps and railroad tracks probably aren't the causes either. Unfortunately, rapid wear is a trait of many so-called high-performance tires. Often, these "sports packages" have become a way for car makers to charge a premium for a feature almost no one really needs.
Switching to the smaller-diameter wheels found on the standard X-type is an easy way to broaden your choices for more durable tires, but it's also an expensive answer (Read this column for more on tires and sidewalls and this column for more on tire pressure).
That makes sense.
